Holiday farmhouse Arraiolos, Evora, Alentejo, Portugal.

Monte do Cortiço is close to Arraiolos, in Alentejo. This is where the real “tapetes de Arraiolos” (Arraiolos rugs) are made and Alentejo is one of Portugal’s best kept secrets. Arraiolos has plenty of shops to tempt you, as well as places to watch how they are still completely handmade.
Arraiolos is just a smooth 130kms drive from Lisbon (most of it motorway); Evora, one of the most beautiful cities of Portugal (World Heritage site) should not be missed, with its cathedral, university, churches. Estremoz is also worth a visit. And if you would like a totally different program there is the Alqueva dam, where you can try several water sports, boat trips can be arranged and of course, swimming.

In the village there is small shop, for basics, as well as a small restaurant for simple meals. For the big shopping, Arraiolos is just 10kms away.

In Monte do Cortiço you can have the most peaceful holidays you can hope for, and as for the children, there is all that space for “adventures”…..
The buildings are set around a large courtyard: straight ahead, the old fountain, to the right some unused barns and to the left, the house itself.
This is an old farm (“monte” means farm) that has been completely renovated by its owners, yet keeping all the old charm.
There is a charming, cosy sitting/dining-room with a huge fireplace (typical of the area), perfect for those chilly winter evenings. It opens onto a patio, fabulous for al-fresco meals, and the swimming-pool (7x4m) - parents with small children should be aware that the pool is not fenced-in and very close to the house. The kitchen is completely fitted with all the modern commodities, yet it has kept its old farm style.
There are three bedrooms: one double with its en-suite bathroom and two twins sharing another bathroom.
