The village of Praia das Ma�as has all the commodities of a small village with a daily market for fruit, vegetables, meat, fish, bread and cheeses. Praia das Ma�as beach owes its name to a river that used to run through apple orchards and the fruit used to fall into the river that has its mouth on the beach, delivering several Apples (Ma�as) into the ocean. The sandy area is surrounded with restaurants and bars and handicraft shops, this place that has become over the years the meeting point of everybody from Sintra. Next to the beach there is a swimming pool with sea water, tennis courts, a children�s park and space for picnics. The beach has also good facilities for sport fishing, on both sides of the sandy area. Has a 1.5km walk along the cliffs that takes you to the next beach of Praia Grande. On Praia das Ma�as one of the main attractions is the tramcar with a lovely journey that starts in Sintra and ends in Praia das Ma�as (14km route) Another idyllic village at 1.5km is Azenhas do Mar, with its white house�s perched on the cliffs, has a small beach and a natural pool. There�s also a public swimming pool here with restaurant. All around this area there are very well known restaurants for serving fresh fish. Every 2nd and 4th Sundays of the month there�s a large market in Sintra at S. Pedro. Colares (2km) The town of Colares is absolutely delightful and has long been a very popular summer resort. Colares is also a demarcated wine-growing region, producing the very popular and increasingly rare Colares wine, which can be tasted at the Adega Regional in a very beautiful building in the town centre. The houses and imposing farms all around Colares affirm this wonderful relation with wine and its production. Cabo da Roca (5km) the most westerly point in Europe and has magnificent views. The coast to the north of Cabo da Roca has dramatic cliffs interspersed with rocky beaches. The Sintra Mountains lie at the heart of the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, classified as UNESCO World Heritage Site, for their cultural interest and their natural beauty. The town of Sintra is of rare historical and architectural importance like: National Palace, Moorish Castle, Pena Palace,Monserrate and Regaleira are all fascinating.Even today, we sense the magic of Sintra Mountains, as the local people have for thousands of years they used to call it the Mountain of the Moon because of its strong traditions of astral cults, still clearly visible in the region's countless monuments and archaeological remains, the Serra de Sintra is a granite outcrop roughly 10 km long, rising abruptly between a vast plain to the north and the estuary of the River Tagus to the south. It is a mountain range that twists and turns, projecting into the Atlantic Ocean to form Cabo da Roca. Thanks to its unique microclimate, Sintra has some of the most beautiful parks in Portugal, planted in keeping with a certain romantic taste, as well as dense and verdant natural vegetation, the mists of its indescribable mystery and its vibrant culture, the great variety of its organised events - a special mention here for the Music Festivals and Ballet Nights organised in the summer. It is a very short drive to Cascais from the house through a wonderful scenic route. Only 15 min away you will find fashionable Cascais and Estoril with its multiple offers for entertainment, shopping, beaches, restaurants, coffee shops, delightful esplanades by the sea, not to mention the buzz of a very active night life... Along the coast, the choice of beaches is endless, famous for water sports white sandy family beaches.
