Good location, privacy and beautifully furnished, this property is the perfect base from which to relax and explore this fascinating region.
As the name indicates this was the home of the old caretaker of Porta (located at about 50 meters from the main house and the swimming pool) recently recuperated combining its rusticity with the modern patterns of comfort.
The owners live at about 50 meters in the Manor House of this extensive farm (more than 50 hectares) which lays over a small quiet valley, near the river Douro, and is crossed by the famous steam train track. A very old house, it had to pay tithe to the Monastery of Salzedas still in 1567. The actual design, baroque with the influence of Nazzoni, resulted in an elegant frontage with a large and impressive Coat of Arms.
Totally incorporated in the front of the Manor House is the Chapel of Nossa Sanhora da Piedade, the first known document pertaining to it being from the 16th Century.
In the dining room of the main house you may, by appointment, be served with dinners in the “old fashioned Portuguese way” as well as breakfast. If you would rather have a light meal it may be served by the pool, on the lawn overlooking the valley and the vineyards.
On one side by the large patio next to the main front of the house there is an interesting building, totally recuperated “A Azenha” (the water mill), a museum area and also of social gathering for the clients, with a bar and tables where typical meals may be served or snacks prepared in the wood oven. It is an ancient and curious olive press with the mill stone still moved by cows, and also an alembic which was still working 25 years ago.
On a lower level a sitting room leads directly to the exterior. It has two more bedrooms (one with a double bed, the other with twin beds) each with a bathroom ensuite, one complete but with shower only and the other with bath but no bidet.
Outside, by the kitchen, besides parking for two cars, there is a large and well exposed lawn for your own use and a small kitchen garden where you can pick all the vegetables you like. The view to the valley goes over well cared for vineyards and old orange groves, their products famous through out the region.
On the first floor a farm kitchen, which still has the old stone wood oven, is totally equipped (electric oven, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge with freezer, toaster, coffee machine, kettle, etc.), it also has an area for meals. Sitting room with TV and two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with twin beds, and a complete bathroom.
Shared swimming pool (13 x 7,50m; 0,90 – 2,10m deep), available all year. Terrace, veranda, courtyard and garden. Parking. Garage. Barbecue.
Bicycles and table football, routings to help the clients know the region better, we will deal with bookings for cruises on the Douro and also trips on the historical steam train, there is a bar, meals (in the main house) and service to the pool.
Satellite TV. Stereo. Air conditioning. Microwave. Washing machine. Tumble dryer. Dishwasher. Cot on request. Highchair. Arrival pack.
