It was from the Belem that Henry the Navigator set sail in the times of the Portuguese Maritime discoveries. Monuments built in those days are within walking distance of the flat, and amongst them and certainly worth visiting are the Tower of Belem and the Jeronimos . In this same area, you can also stroll down the renowned cultural centre of Belem. When perusing the art galleries found here, a visit to the oldest pastry factory of Lisbon is an absolute must. Their most famous pastry is the pastel de Belem which is usually served hot, with or without a dash of cinnamon. Irresistible. In this area you wil also find the maritime Museum and the museu dos coches (old intricate carriages of days gone by).
The river Tagus (Tejo) runs parallel to the main street as does the cable car that will take you into the heart of Lisbon. Nearby you can find busses, trains and taxis which can take you to Lisbon centre or Cascais, another famous shopping and restaurant haven.
